It is only by the Divine specific act of creation that any created being can be called "a son of God". For that which is "born of the flesh is flesh". For God is spirit, and that which is "born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6). Hence Adam is called a "son of God" in Luke 3:38. Those "in Christ" having "the new nature" which is by the direct creation of God (II Corinthians 6:17, Eph. 2:10) can be, and are called "sons of God" (John 1:13, Romans 8:14-15, I John 3:1).
This is why angels are called "the sons of God" in every other place where the expression is used in the Old Testament.
Angels are called "spirits" (Psalms 104:4, Hebrews 1:7,14), for spirits are created by God.
That there were a fall of the angels is certain from Jude 1:6.
Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
THEY REFUSED TO BE BORN OF A WOMAN LIKE EVERYONE ELSE (WE ALL HAVE TO PASS THROUGH THIS FLESH AGE), AND INSTEAD THEY CAME DOWN AND SEDUCED WOMEN (GENESIS 6).
The time of their fall is given as having taken place "in the days of Noah" (I Peter 3:20, II Peter 2:7), though there have been a prior fall (they refused to be born of a woman) which caused the end of "the world that then was", Gen. 1:1, II Peter 3:6 (the destruction of the first earth age ; the age of the dinosaurs). For this sin (seducing women instead of being born of a woman) they are "reserved unto judgment", II Peter 2:4, and are "in prison", I Peter 3:19.
They are coming back to seduce women again, and Satan is coming with them, in the near future (Rev. 12:7-9). Christ will destroy these angels upon His arrival (Rev. 11:13).
The progeny of the fallen angels with the daughters of Adam (Genesis 6) are called "Giants". They were great in size, as well as great in wickedness. They were superhuman, abnormal beings ; and their destruction was necessary for the preservation of the human race, and for the faithfulness of God's word (Genesis 3:15).
This was why the flood was brought "upon the world of the ungodly" (II Peter 2:5) as prophesied by Enoch (Jude 1:14). But we read of the Nephilim again in Numbers 13:33. How, it may be asked, could this be, if they were all destroyed in the flood ? The answer is contained in Genesis 6:4, where we read :
"There were Nephilim in the earth in those days (in the days of Noah) ; and also AFTER THAT, when the sons of God came in into the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became (the) mighty men (Hebrew Gibbor,, the heroes) which were of old, men of renown".
So that "after that", there was a second irruption of these fallen angels, evidently smaller in number and more limited in area, for they were for the most part confined to Canaan, and were in fact known at "the nations of Canaan". It was for the destruction of these, that the sword of Israel was necessary, as the flood had been before.
In Genesis 14:5 they were known as "Rephain" and "Emim", and had established themselves at Asheroth Karnaim and Shaveh Kiriathaim.
They were mixed with five nations, and were called by many names, such as Anakim, from one Anak which came from the Nephilim (Numbers 13:23), and Rephaim, from Rapha, another notable one among them. They were also the Hittites, Jebusites, Perizzites, Kadmonites, kenizites, Girgashites, mixed among the Amorites, and the Philistines (Goliath was one of their offspring).
Their strength is seen in "the giant cities of Bashan" today ; and we know not how far they may have been utilized by Egypt in the construction of buildings, which is still an unsolved problem. Arba was rebuilt by the Khabiri confederates seven years before Zoan was built by the Egyptian Pharaohs of the 19th dynasty (Numbers 13:22).
If these Nephilim, and their branch of Rephaim, were associated with Egypt, we have an explanation of the problem which has for ages perplexed all engineers, as to how those huge stones and monuments were brought together. Why not in Egypt as well as in "the giant cities of Bashan" which exist, as such, to this day ?
Moreover, we have in these mighty men, the "men of renown", the explanation of their origin of the Greek mythology. The mythology was no mere invention of the human brain, but it grew out of the traditions, and memories, and legends of the doings of that mighty race of beings ; and was gradually evolved out of the "heroes" of Genesis 6:4. The fact that they were supernatural in their origin formed an easy step to their being regarded at the demi-gods of the Greeks.
Thus the Babylonian "Creation Tablets", the Egyptian "Book of the dead", the Greek mythology, and heathen Cosmogonies, which by some are set on an equality with Scripture, or by others adduced in support of it, are all the corruption and perversion of primitive truths, distorted in proportion as their origin was forgotten, and their memories faded away.
The Nephilim mixing with humans was one of Satan's tool to destroy the perfect progeny of Christ.

Quote in Dr. Bullinger's Pamphlet:
ReplyDeleteThere is Eccl. 9:5, which declares that 'The dead know not anything.' This also seems so clear as to admit of no second meaning. 'The dead' are the dead; they are those who have ceased to live; and, if the dead do or can know anything, then words are useless for the purpose of revelation" (pp. 4, 5).
"It does not say dead bodies know not anything, but 'the dead,' i.e., dead people, who are set in contrast with 'the living' " (p. 5).
End Quote.
**Dr. Bullinger teaches that at death a man-spirit, soul and body-ceases to exist. Based on this one verse he has multilated the scriptures and built his beliefs around a false understanding of one verse.
But if we keep the verse in context, the very next verse will show Dr. Bullinger wrong:
For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:5-6
"UNDER THE SUN!" being the key to understanding. Therefore in relation to this EARTH!! Physical death. NOT the Spirit/soul death.
Dr. Bullinger has neglected to consider that Christ has abolished death and brought life to the Spirit/soul.
and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
2 Timothy 1:10
Let's refute the katabole/recreation theory using scripture.
ReplyDeleteYou've mentioned the Shepherds Chapel. I've found that they believe this katabole theory saying katabole should be translated as overthrow or destroyed.
katabole is used 11 times in the KJV.
Matt 13:35, Matt 25:34, Luke 11:50, John 17:24, Eph 1:4, Heb 4:3, Heb 9:26, Heb 11:11, 1 Pet 1:20, Rev 13:8, Rev 17:8.
All except Hebrews 11:11 is translated as: founding (laying down a foundation) referring to the world.
By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive (katabolē), even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.
Hebrews 11:11
In this verse the word conceive is katabolē
So would overthrow or destroy be appropriate in this verse? And how do you justify that if so?
Here's a copy and paste definition found in the Thayer's Greek Lexicon: (I've put [[]] around Hebrew 11:11 so you can see)
1. a throwing or laying down: τοῦ
σπέρματος (namely, εἰς τήν μήτραν), the injection or depositing of the virile semen in the womb, Lucian, amor. 19; Galen, aphorism. iv. § 1; of the seed of animals and plants, Philo de opif. mund. §§ 22, 45; σπέρματα τά εἰς γῆν ἤ μήτραν καταβαλλομενα, Antoninus 4, 36; accordingly many interpret the words Σάρρα δύναμιν εἰς καταβολήν σπέρματος ἔλαβε in [[Hebrews 11:11]], she received power to conceive seed. But since it belongs to the male καταβάλλειν τό σπέρμα, not to the female, this interpretation cannot stand ((according to the reading of WH marginal reading αὐτῇ Σάρρα, Abr. remains the subjunctive of ἔλαβεν; but see 2 below)); cf. Bleek (and, on the other side, Kurtz) at the passage.
According to the Lexicon, Hebrews 11:11 belongs to the male, therefore is misinterpreted. The Lexicon directs us to number 2 for the correct interpretation.
See copy and paste directly from the Lexicon for number 2 below:
2. a founding (laying down a foundation): εἰς καταβολήν σπέρματος, to found a posterity, [[Hebrews 11:11]] (but compare above) (πυραννιδος, Polybius 13, 6, 2; ἅμα τῇ πρώτη καταβολή τῶν ἀνθρώπων, Plato, aquae et ignis comp. C. 2). ἀπό καταβολῆς κόσμου, from the foundation of the world: Matthew 13:35 (L T Tr WH omit κόσμου); Matthew 25:34; Luke 11:50; Hebrews 4:3; Hebrews 9:28; Revelation 13:8; Revelation 17:8; πρό καταβολῆς κόσμου, John 17:24; Ephesians 1:4; 1 Peter 1:20.
Furthermore:
Time cannot be inserted between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2 because verse 2 does not follow verse 1 in time. Verse 2 uses a Hebrew grammatical device that is called a waw-disjunctive. This is where a sentence begins with the Hebrew word for and (waw) followed by a noun such as the earth (erets). A waw-disjunctive indicates that the sentence is describing the previous one and does not follow in time. In other words, verse 2 is describing the conditions of the earth when it was first created. Hebrew grammar simply will not allow for the insertion of vast periods of time between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 in which a supposed satanic fall took place.
Exodus clearly teaches the world and everything in it was CREATED in 6 days.
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Exodus 20:11
